Are you moving in Vancouver?

1. Watch the weather

Depending on the season, Vancouver can be subject to periods of constant rain - and periods of randomly occurring showers. Ensuring that you are fully aware of the weather for the week of your move can save a lot of stress and water damage to your belongings. If the rain cannot be avoided, then consider using tarps or other weather-proofing to ensure that any sensitive boxes aren't drenched.

2. Elevators and parking

Booking your elevators and saving a parking spot will save tons of time. If your movers have to wait for elevators each time they want to bring a load to the truck, the time will add up very quickly. Call your building manager and schedule your elevator before you call your moving company. The night before your movers show up try to park where you think the best parking spot is for them And if you have a neighbour who’s willing to park beside you, the movers will have plenty of room to maneuver.

3. Be aware of traffic bottlenecks

If the day of your move in Vancouver is strapped for time, a little research of your trip path can save time and aggravation. If driving the moving truck from the Fraser Valley or beyond, for example, be sure to allow for delays at the Port Mann Bridge - or plan to leave earlier. Early morning commuters often result in long delays along the stretch of highway up to the bridge. Consultation with an experienced, local moving company can help provide this information.

4. Packing your stuff

Being properly packed and prepared is important when moving. Vancouver companies often offer packing services at the same rate as their moving service. In order to save money on your move be sure everything is in boxes that are full and taped shut. Boxes that are half full tend to squish on one side and then cause stuff on top to tip over. Put books and other heavy items into small boxes. Put a layer of newspaper or packing paper at the bottom of the box when packing plates and other breakables. Wrap each plate or item and fill the empty space with crumpled up news paper to prevent damage. You can usually get boxes from storage facilities or you can google moving supplies and your city. Other companies offer plastic reusable boxes which are incredibly convenient. Check out say no to boxes in Vancouver, they’ll come by your house and tell you how many you need, it’s about the same price as buying boxes and it’s much greener.

5. Prepare for hills

If you have experience moving in flat or prairie land, some extra thought will be needed when packing for the hilly areas in Vancouver. Making sure that fragile items are well padded and all items are secure will ensure that when driving up and down steep slopes, your belongings aren't damaged. Careful driving and eased braking and accelerating can help, however nothing can be done about gravity.
